The poʻouli, or black-faced honeycreeper, was an extremely quiet bird that inhabited only the very wet, easternmost side of Maui. Rare by the early 1900s, it was driven to extinction by habitat loss, disease and a decline in the native tree snails that served as a key food. Hawaii is one of the world's epicenters for the wildlife extinction crisis. In fact, about 1/3 of all species listed as threatened or endangered in the U.S. are in Hawaii.
