We know machine learning essentially runs our daily life. AI (Artificial Intelligence) sees patterns in data and makes decisions or predictions based on that pattern. Which makes it unsurprising that this system is learning gender bias through us humans. Even though it’s constantly absorbing new information, the models and systems we create and train are a reflection of ourselves. And that includes the worst of us. AI has even disproportionately affected people of color. In one algorithm study, it was found that AI had a high accuracy of 99% in detecting male faces. However, the system’s ability to recognize black women was significantly lower at only 65% of the time. There are real and disturbing consequences for biased AI.
