What happens after a lost species is rediscovered? Then the work really begins! Re:wild, americanbirdconservancy & ridgesfoundation are mounting a follow-up expedition to learn more about a rediscovered species in Papua New Guinea in 2025.
The goal is to learn more about Auwo (Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon), which was lost to science for 127 years and rediscovered in 2022 by an expedition funded by ridgesfoundation and supported by americanbirdconservancy & re:wild. An expedition team will work with local organizations and government to complete a systematic survey for the Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon, which will help determine the population size of the large, ground-dwelling pigeon and could inform a long-term conservation strategy for this iconic species. Researchers are also hoping to get a DNA sample of the bird.
