Each year The Booker Prize commissions individual makers who are members of Designer Bookbinders (@db_bookbinding_uk) to create a bespoke book binding for our six shortlisted authors. We have a series of in-progress shots to share with you before the final versions are unveiled on 19 November 2020. Designer Lori Sauer (@beechingstoke) will be binding the cover of The Shadow King by #2020BookerPrize shortlisted author, @MaazaMengiste. Lori shares the process behind the binding design below: ‘I was very pleased to have this novel to bind. The story revolves around a core of vividly drawn characters and the roles they play in a pivotal point of Ethiopian history. There is tremendous weight and strength to the telling. The author fills the narrative with images of light and shade, of the brutality and cruelty of the time, but also of the courage and determination of a people.
