We’re continuing our in-progress shots of the bespoke bindings being created by members of Designer Bookbinders (@db_bookbinding_uk) for our six shortlisted authors. We’ll unveil the final versions at the winner ceremony, which is being held at 7pm on 19 November 2020. Designer Rachel Ward-Sale (@rachelward_sale) is creating a bound edition of This Mournable Body by #2020BookerPrize shortlisted author, Tsitsi Dangerembga. Rachel shares the process behind the binding design below: ‘The yellow edges and flyleaves have been decorated with green-stencilled leaves based on the jacaranda trees mentioned in the book. Additional designs on the binding reflect events in the book, which affect the main character, Tambudzai. Onlaid leather circles are coloured to match her state of mind, red for the trauma of war, black for depression, blue for tears, purple and gold for her new lucrative job and grey for a final state of calm.
