Here’s the first in our winner photos to inspire you to embark on our #ManBooker50 challenge… Winner of the inaugural Booker prize in 1969, P. H. Newby’s Something to Answer For takes us to Port Said, Cairo following the end of World War II. The beguiling, dream-like narrative follows ex-British soldier Townrow’s return to Egypt and his feverish search for truth during the chaos of the nationalisation of the Suez Canal. ‘They understood one another. When one spoke the truth the other knew he was speaking the truth; when one lies the other knew he lied. You could not expect much more from a relationship than that. Whole societies could be built on it.’ #SomethingtoAnswerFor #dreamlike #truth
