The mighty mclaren F1 GTR, powered by BMW’s legendary S70 V12. But what if jackson.lambros told you the car’s powerplant was almost very different? In the late 80s, Gordon Murray, who was in charge of the F1 project at the time, went to Honda and Ayrton Senna and tried to convince them to build a 4 1/2-liter V10 or V12. Believe it or not…Honda couldn’t be convinced to do so. So, where to next? You guessed it: BMW. The base was the M70 motor used in the 7 and 8-series models at the time, beefed up to make over 700 HP (in some cases, 900!). This engine would outlast the F1 GTR, being used in BMW’s V12 LMR Le Mans racer up until the mid-2000s. What would things have been like if Honda had said yes?
