But did you know that the track was initially designed to host NASCAR-style stock car races? Yes, you heard that right. We nearly got Japanese NASCAR. The original layout was a 4km (2.5 mile) banked superspeedway inspired by Daytona with a road course in the middle. But the money ran out with only the first banking and the road course completed. So the organizers decided to combine what they had already and create the first version of Fuji Speedway, opening in 1965.
