In a landmark decision, a federal jury has found former Louisville police detective Brett Hankison guilty of depriving Breonna Taylor of her civil rights during the tragic raid on her home on March 13, 2020. This verdict marks the first conviction of any officer involved in the raid, which was based on a search warrant later revealed to have been secured with faulty information.
The jury reached this decision after hours of deliberation, even as they initially indicated they were deadlocked on this charge.
Hankison now faces a potential life sentence, though a date for sentencing has yet to be scheduled. Notably, the jury also found him not guilty on charges related to violating the civil rights of Taylor’s neighbors, whose apartment was struck by stray bullets during the chaotic raid.
