The Hmong American Community of Oregon brought together about 3,000 people Saturday to celebrate the Hmong New Year at Reynolds High School in Troutdale. The festivities, marking the 49th anniversary of the Hmong exodus from Laos and Thailand, featured music, dance, sports, traditional clothing and cultural rituals. The Hmong New Year, or “Noj Peb Caug,” typically occurs between November and December to signify the end of the harvest season. It’s a time to celebrate and remember ancestors and spirits through lively gatherings. Saturday’s event included traditional reed music, stage performances, volleyball competitions and crossbow games where participants aimed at balloons.
