Fareway's light-filled new headquarters is a cutting-edge space filled with giant video screens, including one depicting virtual store shelves, a free employee cafeteria, tributes to the history of the grocery chain and preparation for its future, including a studio for social media presentations and space for a third more staff.
But CEO Reynolds Cramer said his favorite thing about the new Johnston office is something he had missed from early in his career: being able to easily walk to see any employee he needs.
Cramer's grandparents, Paul and MaryEllen Beckwith, opened farewaystores first store in Boone on May 12, 1938, and established the company's headquarters there, despite incorporating in Ames. But since 2012, Fareway's corporate divisions have been split between two offices in Boone, making it harder to do everything, Cramer said.
Giving the Des Moines Register a tour of the building last week, Cramer said moving out of Boone after 86 years felt more sweet than bitter.
