Happy World Oceans Day! A Southern Right Whale and diver meet on the seafloor in the Auckland Islands of New Zealand. I photographed this scene while producing a story about Right Whales published in
@natgeo in 2008. According to the researcher working with me, this was a population of whales that had never seen humans underwater before. These animals were extremely curious about us and showed no fear. I remember being alone at a depth of 70-feet and having this 45-foot long, 70-ton whale hovering inches above me, clearly trying to figure out what I was and gently swimming around me. This remains one of the most extraordinary experiences I've had in over 40 years of exploring Earth's oceans.
