Carbon dioxide emissions absorbed by the ocean change react with seawater and lower its pH, a phenomenon known as “ocean acidification.” More acidic seawater is a big problem for lots of sea creatures, but especially those with calcium carbonate shells and skeletons, like shellfish and corals; their shells more readily dissolve in more acidic water, and the lower-pH seawater also provides fewer carbonate ions to build their shells. . . . . . . . . .
