This cross-section of a stem of Aristolochia sipho—sometimes called Dutchman’s pipe—shows both the xylem and phloem, which are pipelines in plants for transporting water and nutrients, respectively. The xylem is the bluish region with the large pores, while the phloem is the more whitish region, separated by the darker stripe of the vascular cambium, a region of cells that divides to create secondary growth in the plant, increasing its thickness.
