In 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and represented New York’s 12th congressional district. Four years later during the 1972 election, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s nomination for President of the United States—as well as the very first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Though her campaign did not succeed to get her the needed votes, it still succeeded to set a bold example in many other ways. Shirley Chisholm went on to serve seven terms from 1969 to 1983. During her time, she worked to expand the food stamp program, helped create the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and became a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus. - 🎥: AfricanArchives on Twitter/X #ShirleyChisholm #Election2024 #blackhistory
