Set to appear at The Grand Palais Sale on 6 February 2025, the Matra MS640, chassis no. 02, stands as a remarkable testament to engineering ambition and resilience. Originally designed by Robert Choulet for the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans, the MS640 featured a powerful Matra V12 engine capable of delivering 420 horsepower, showcasing a futuristic approach to race car design. Tragically, the prototype met disaster during testing on the Mulsanne Straight, with driver Henri Pescarolo suffering serious injuries in a near-fatal crash that left the MS640 almost entirely destroyed. Following this setback, Matra’s racing legacy continued with the MS670, which secured three consecutive victories at Le Mans from 1972 to 1974, with Pescarolo as a key driver.
