It’s bulk season! Prairie dogs are currently bulking up by eating more and storing fat reserves to help them through the winter. Same. This extra fat provides them with the energy they need to stay warm and active during the colder months when food may be scarce.
Do prairie dogs hibernate? Actually, they enter a state of ‘torpor.’ Torpor is a short-term reduction in metabolic rate and body temperature that allows animals to conserve energy and survive harsh conditions. They may take it easy for a few days in row, but occasionally can be coaxed out of the burrow on milder days to hang out with friends. I came. I saw. I left early. Sounds like a plan.
