While my experiences “Traveling while Black” have been more comical than challenging, the constant stares, requests to take photos, and alternative forms “othering” can get tiring. With that said, it’s pretty much par for the course when traveling to destinations that don’t have (m)any people who look like you, so I try to take it in stride. I’ve had locals ask to take my photo in places like Uzbekistan, South Korea, and China— as long as they ask permission and are generally respectful, I oblige (and use it as an opportunity to engage and connect.
