The Japanese sable, or Nihon ten, is native to Hokkaido, Japan. Known for its luxurious fur—once highly coveted for luxury garments—this solitary mammal roams the dense forests, playing a vital role in the local ecosystem as a predator.
Photographer Takashi Okashi’s incredible images of the Nihon ten recently earned recognition in a Japanese nature photography contest, placing in the digital category and featured in an exhibition showcasing Japan’s natural beauty.
Nihon ten are primarily crepuscular, hunting at dawn and dusk, and have a diet ranging from small mammals and birds to insects and berries. Conservation efforts have helped stabilize their population after overhunting in the past, but habitat loss remains a concern.
Swipe to see these award-winning images and appreciate the beauty of one of Japan’s most elusive animals!
