Trans surfer Sasha Jane Lowerson was nearly barred from participating in a Huntington Beach longboard competition following the organizer’s requirement that contenders apply under their gender assigned at birth.
Surf equity activists tapped the California Coastal Commision to intervene, who wrote to organizers that “prohibiting or unfairly limiting transgender athletes… does not meet the requirements of public access policies of the Coastal Act”
The organizers have complied and Lowerson has reportedly chosen not to compete.
