Today in Hip-Hop — G-Unit officially released their debut studio album, ‘Beg for Mercy.’
After the success of 50 Cent’s solo debut, ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin,’ and a string of self-released mixtapes, on November 14, 2003, G-Unit made their proper introduction with ‘Beg for Mercy.’ The album included radio hits like “Smile” and “Wanna Get to Know You,” and features production from Dr. Dre, Scott Storch, No I.D., Hi-Tek, and more. G-Unit’s fourth member, Tony Yayo makes only two appearances on the album alongside 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, and Young Buck, due to being sentenced to jail at the time of the album’s recording.
‘Beg for Mercy’ debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 behind Jay-Z’s ‘The Black Album’ and 2Pac’s ‘Tupac: Resurrection.’ The album has since be certified 2x Platinum.
