Commit, liftoff.
In a driving rain, the Apollo 12 mission lifted off for the second crewed lunar landing mission
#OTD in 1969. Less than a minute into the mission, the spacecraft was met with a striking surprise — Apollo 12 was struck by lightning twice at 36 and 52 seconds after launch.
The guidance computer reset and the Command Module fuel cells briefly shut off. Based on scenarios run during training a year earlier, quick-thinking flight controller John Aaron, shown here, proposed a solution: “Try SCE to Aux.”
SCE stands for Signal Conditioning Equipment. Aaron recalled that normal readings could be restored on its auxiliary setting, meaning that it could run even under low-voltage conditions.
Power was restored, and the rest was history.
