Last month, the NCAA announced the immediate elimination of the National Letter of Intent (NLI) program, marking a historic change in the collegiate recruiting landscape. Established in 1964, the NLI was a binding contract between student-athletes and universities. When an athlete signed an NLI, they committed to a school for a full year in exchange for financial aid. Signing an NLI also shut down the athlete’s recruiting process, preventing other schools from contacting them. The NLI will be replaced by a new financial aid agreement that will provide many of the same core functions. The decision will grant players with more flexibility without the one-year commitment requirement. Athletes may have more liberty to transfer if their circumstances change, whether it’s a coaching change, playing time concerns, or better opportunities elsewhere.
