The dangers of getting too comfortable in sport (life).
Have you felt it?
We want kids to feel safe, supported, able to be themselves. When I say comfortable, I don’t mean to say there isn’t value in a safe space- but there seems to be a line that’s been crossed in recent months-
Safe turns complacent. Instead of urging kids to “go for it” and making them feel empowered, lessons sometimes has felt more like asking them to get their shoes off the couch. Respect of the game is a thing of the past. It’s replaced by players commiserating over how many practices they had this week.
More reps has shifted focus away from quality and into moving just to move. Just because kids have “no days off” it seems like some feel entitled to just show up; giving the impression that they think they have already put in the work when…I’m thinking we are further from the actual work required to become elite: discipline, patience, perspective, persistence.
