20-year-old American keeper Gabriel Slonina broke out in MLS with Chicago Fire and took a gamble moving to Chelsea in 2023. In an interview with CBS Sports, he was asked by legendary former USMNT keeper Tony Meola on where he sees himself in June 2026. “I want to be the starting goalkeeper for the men’s national team. I think that’s a goal I’m gonna aim for,” Slonina answered confidently. “I’m going to work my hardest towards and I wanna put that vision I have my in head into reality. I’m just gonna work my hardest to be the starting goalkeeper, be part of that squad, and make history with the U.S.” Slonina got to spend preseason with Mauricio Pochettino, who was managing Chelsea at the time, in the summer of 2023. He spent last season on loan in the Belgian League, and this season he’s at Barnsley, where he’s made 14 appearances so far.
