SKIPJACK EXHIBIT! The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum has featured traditional boatbuilding in St. Augustine since 2007 when it first established the Heritage Boatworks, a living boatbuilding exhibit which continues on the art of traditional boat carpentry to future generations and shares it with visitors.
In the Heritage Boatwork program, community volunteers learn and practice the traditional art of boat carpentry in full view of the public, and produce great works of art out of local timber.
In late 2013 the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum received funding from a Crisp Ellert grant awarded by The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, which has recognized the artistic aspects of the traditional joinery work used in boat carpentry. The grant was to fund the construction of a traditional sailing craft that was relevant to the maritime history of St. Augustine and northeast Florida in general.
