𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐃𝐄𝐑. 🇺🇸 • Loyola alum Rex Maurer ’23 just set the US Record in the 500 Freestyle (4:04.54), shattering the previous mark by nearly two seconds to become the second-fastest swimmer in that event — 𝐈𝐍 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘! The only person to ever swim faster in the 500 Free is French star Leon Marchand, who won 4 Olympic gold medals in Paris. Maurer broke the US record at the 2024 Longhorn Elite Invite in Austin, TX. As a senior for LoyolaSwim in May of 2023, Maurer set what was then the national record at the CIF-SS Division I Finals (4:12.70). Eighteen months later, Maurer shaved more than 𝐄𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 seconds off that mark to stake his claim as the fastest American 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 to swim the 500 Free.
