JUST ANNOUNCED: Beginning on February 5, 2025, “My Mother and Eye” by carmen.winant will be featured on jcdecauxna bus shelters across New York City, Chicago, and Boston. This marks Winant’s most expansive public exhibition to date, featuring 11 compositions created from over 1,200 film stills.
These stills were captured from films made by Winant and her mother during their teenage years—one shot on Super 8 by her mother at 18, the other on 35mm by Winant at 17—as they travelled across the U.S. From the vast cornfields of the Midwest to the Rocky Mountains, these images capture intimate and political landscapes shared between mother and daughter. “In My Mother and Eye,” Winant disrupts linear time, crafting non-sequential compositions that capture the fluidity of generational stories and the ways women experience the world. By bringing in these personal histories into public space, Winant offers a unique space for reflection on self-representation, kinship, and transformation.
