Color-on-color uniform matchups, now a rarity, were once rather common in college football. Auburn and Alabama played in nine such games between 1950 and 1963. The Tigers would come away with a 5-4 record in these games.
The 1950 meeting saw Auburn sporting a unique two-toned pant look, with the front side appearing to be orange and the back-half tan colored. Auburn would also wear two helmets - as was common at that time - to designate positions. Orange helmets were worn by the QB, RBs, and WRs while the offensive line and defense wore navy.
In 1953, the Tigers would wear orange jerseys against Alabama’s crimson, creating a bright uniform matchup with a lack of necessary contrast. That would be the only time that Auburn wore orange jerseys against Alabama since the series resumed in 1948.
The Iron Bowl was a navy-vs-crimson matchup for eight seasons during the 13-year stretch. Auburn would win the final of these games in 1963 by a 10-7 score.
