Sea urchins are more than meets the eye! In this video, you can see a pincushion urchin (Lytechinus variegatus) spawning in our Water’s Edge exhibit. Adult urchins reproduce by releasing eggs and sperm into the open ocean, where they combine to produce microscopic planktonic larvae. Some species can release millions of eggs at once! While only a small number of offspring will successfully develop, this spawning behavior can be a sign that the urchin is thriving in its environment.
