An Iranian woman in Tehran received 74 lashes after being arrested by the “morality police” for refusing to comply with the country’s discriminatory mandatory hijab laws for women. The so-called “morality police” in Iran are tasked with enforcing strict dress codes, particularly targeting women. These forces have been widely reported for harassing women through physical violence, including slapping, beating with batons, and forcibly detaining them in police vans for alleged violations of the dress code. Penalties for not complying with mandatory hijab regulations range from fines and lashes to imprisonment. Authorities have also been known to confiscate vehicles driven by women deemed to be “improperly” veiled.
