Spurge is a low-growing weed that tends to grow in any open area, especially sidewalk cracks and thin lawns. It often grows in poor or compacted soil.
Spurge has a central taproot that can be up to 2 feet long and plants can grow to be up to 3 feet wide. Thousands of seeds are produced by each plant.
The best defense against spurge is a thick, healthy lawn.
If you need to purge the spurge from your lawn, here's a few practices you can use:
- apply pre-emergent to prevent seeds from sprouting
-treat any spurge with herbicide if not near other plants
-pulling any spurge that is near other desirable plants
-Aerate your lawn at least once a year to help de-compact your soil
