Bees are the unsung heroes of Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, responsible for pollinating 90% of its plant species. 🐝
But many of the native populations, 100 of its 300 bee species to be exact, are in danger of extinction, which could lead to the collapse of one of the most valuable forest ecosystems on the planet.
Thanks to the Jardin de Mels project, however, the state of Paraná, Brazil is taking bold action to protect these vital pollinators. Over 200 hives of native stingless bees have been installed in parks, schools, and even GovernoParana buildings to help preserve local biodiversity and protect endangered plants.
That’s right: bees and hives all over public places, and that’s on purpose, says Valdemar Bernardo Jorge, Secretary of State for Sustainable Development: “It’s a project that draws the attention of the population to the need to care for the environment.”
