In 2023, right after Idaho experienced a 66% increase in the number of registered 18 & 19 year old voters, the legislature passed new voting laws that specifically targeted students. Unfortunately, these laws are working. Idaho recently experienced a 23% decrease in registered 18 & 19 year olds. This unprecedented drop in young registered voters combined with waits of over 5 hours & hundreds of students turned away (or just giving up) at campus polling places on Election Day Nov. 5, exacerbated disenfranchisement of students who wanted to vote. But students aren’t the only Idahoan who have been unable to register & vote under the new laws. New Idaho residents, people who have moved into care facilities & others who are legally-eligible to vote were unable to register & vote under Idaho’s new laws.
