For the first time ever, the Shawnee Mission East community was invited to ‘Late Night in the Castle’ based on ‘Late Night in the Phog’, the Kansas University tradition that has been going on for 40 years. ‘Late Night in the Castle’ was hosted on December 3. at 8 p.m. in the main gym after the boys and girls teams hosted jamborees against SM North, Blue Valley Southwest, Olathe West, Blue Valley and De Soto. The event was organized by East parents, the boys and girls basketball head coaches and athletic director Ryan Johnson. The parents decided to start this new tradition to bring the East community together to kickoff basketball season with the same spirit and energy as football season.  The night consisted of performances from the JV and varsity Lancer Dancers and the freshmen, JV, varsity and competition cheerleaders.
