Track is a force for good During the Holiday Farm Fire that devastated the McKenzie River Valley last year, the McKenzie Community Track was used as a safety zone for families escaping the destruction. Firefighters fought back the encroaching flames around the oval to create a safe haven until everyone could be escorted out of the valley. A month and a half before the fire, the track played host to world class competition. During the pandemic, the Bigger Friendly was quite possibly the most competitive meet going on in the world at that time. The community welcomed in athletes to compete in the sport’s time of need. Now it is our time to pay them back. For tonight’s McKenzie International, world class fields will line up once again at the track in the valley, built on the site of an old millpond, where legend has it that the logs that built the old Hayward Field, cut from the surrounding hillsides once floated. The livestream of the event will be found at portlandtrack.com for $5....
