Argentina fans gather in Portland to cheer on Lionel Messi-led team in World Cup final: "This feels like home"
The sun wasn’t up yet, but a thumping bass drum resonating throughout Northeast Portland’s Cully neighborhood served as a beacon for Argentine soccer fans who came together to support their team in the World Cup final.
Organized by Argentinos en Portland, the viewing party attracted about 200 people who stood shoulder-to-shoulder inside
@nicoscantina and spilled over to an outside patio area.
The mood was at times jubilant and intense for nearly three hours after the 7 a.m. kickoff, but the biggest outpouring of emotion came when Argentina prevailed in a penalty shootout to beat France for the championship.
An impromptu dance party erupted on the cantina’s patio, with fans clad in Lionel Messi jerseys and draped in Argentina flags hugging one another and singing to celebrate the country’s first World Cup title since 1986. Many were in tears, especially those not old enough...
