On #InternationalWomensDay, we celebrate six American women who have been forerunners for our sport on the Olympic stage. - Even in a sport generally touted for its equality, it took a long time for that equality to be reflected in the competition schedule. Of the 23 women’s track and field event disciplines at the Olympic Games, 10 have only been added to the program in the last 10 Olympic cycles: 5K, 10K, Marathon, 400m Hurdles, Steeplechase, 20K Race Walk, Pole Vault, Triple Jump, Hammer Throw and Heptathlon. - American women have brought home medals in six of those events. Today, we recognize some of these leaders in sport who continue to inspire the next generation of athletes.
