#repost vondapaige This loss is tough. I was introduced to the poetry of Nikki Giovanni by an art teacher in high school who became the sponsor of the Black Cultural Society I co-founded.
๐ค๐I read the poem Ego Tripping (which she wrote in 1972) and performed it often. Every time I did I straightened my spine, celebrated my โfro and reveled in the joy and pride of being a Black woman.
๐ค๐Decades later when I met her in Springfield, Mo while covering her book tour as a reporter I was fangirling so much I could hardly speak. She was magnificent.
๐ค๐Iโve been re-reading Ego Tripping these last few days. And to all of my sisters who have been feeling the weight and disappointment of recent events and hurt by the notion that our hard work for justice, equity and democracy seems to have been in vain - Read it. Share it.
