It's about language and slugs and memory and family and monsterdom and a most endearing relationship between a boy and a groundskeeper. Plus, just as I had finished reading it, I found someone reading a copy at the Dead Ink Bookshop in Liverpool. It all felt very serendipitous. Verdigris (props to the marvelous translation in English) is one of my favourite books of the year along with Pemi Aguda's 'Ghostroots' and Thomas Grattan's 'In Tongues'.
