Recognizing the pressing need to get kids back in school, officials at Iowa's largest and most diverse district have coupled home visits with other programs to help reconnect with missing students and identify the issues that are keeping them out of class.
During the 2024 legislative session, Iowa Republicans introduced Senate File 2435, changing attendance requirements for Iowa schools, including how administrators and county attorneys handle chronic absenteeism.
The law requires school officials, absent students and their family to create a plan to get the children to class. If that plan fails, schools must involve a county attorney.
