During #BlackhistoryMonth we are highlighting Black and African American trailblazers in the mental health and disability space. Let's honor our history, celebrate the achievements we’ve made to bring us to our present, and remember there is still so much to do through our daily love, dedication, and service. Today we honor Lois Curtis, an influential artist and lifelong disability advocate. Despite being capable of living in her community, Lois spent a significant portion of her life living in institutionalized settings because of her developmental and mental disabilities. Lois fought to get out and served as the lead plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case “Olmstead vs. L.C" ruling in her favor, recognizing that warehousing people with disabilities in deficient mental institutions constituted discrimination under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
