Pool Before it was the iconic Lorraine Motel, where history stood still on April 4, 1968, it was once known as the Windsor Hotel in the 1920s and later the Marquette Hotel. Purchased by Walter Bailey in 1945 and renamed after his wife and the popular song ‘Sweet Lorraine,’ it became a safe haven for Black travelers during segregation. Legends like Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding rested here while touring Memphis. The Lorraine’s legacy shifted forever when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated here, transforming it into a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement. Today, it stands as part of the National Civil Rights Museum ncrmuseum, honoring its deep and storied history. #MemphisHistory #CivilRights #LorraineMotel #NationalCivilRightsMuseum #UnapologeticallyMemphis #BlackHistory #HistoricMemphis #DrKingLegacy
