Last week, bipartisan legislation honored the late Shirley Chisholm, the nation’s first Black Congresswoman. President Joe Biden honored Chisholm by awarding her the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award Congress can bestow. Days prior, Vice President Kamala Harris signed the measure, alongside the bill’s two lead sponsors, Sen. Laphonza Butler and Rep. Barbara Lee. “I see no one more deserving than Shirley Chisholm,” Lee said. “It is critical for the next generation of leaders to see the first Black woman elected to Congress get the recognition that she deserves.” The gold medal will be designed with Chisholm’s image and name, and will be given to the Smithsonian Institute to be made available for display.
