Mirliton is a vegetable that is heavily grown in south Louisiana and fruits in the fall. In New Orleans, you can see this plant vining up over fences and trellises. They can get very large. A classice dish for Thanksgiving, especially in New Orleans is shrimp and mirliton dressing. So good! My grandma used to make it.
