With three classic Latin American novels being adapted for television, including Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude”, Juan Rulfo’s “Pedro Páramo”, and Laura Esquivel’s “Like Water for Chocolate”, it’s a big year for Latino representation in Hollywood. A comprehensive 2014 Columbia University media study found that Latinos on TV are often represented as criminals, law enforcers, hyper-sexualized beings and low-wage workers. These Latin American classics being reimagined is indicative of a larger shift regarding Latin American representation: it doesn’t portray stereotypes that have been associated with Latinos in the media. “It does offer that kind of alternative storyline from what audiences have grown accustomed to,” Christina Ramón, director of the entertainment and media research initiative at UCLA, said about the new shows' content.
