ℹ️ Back in the early seasons of Formula E, the electric race cars could not complete a whole race distance on single charge. This meant that mid-way through the race, the drivers were forced to make a pit stop, jumping out their car and into a second one! To keep it fair, the drivers had a minimum pit stop time before they could exit the pits and rejoin the action - but there will still no time for mistakes! Ten years down the line, the technical capabilities of the batteries have increased massively, meaning the car change is no longer necessary. In races today, teams now focus on optimising energy usage via efficient driving techniques or regeneration through braking. In fact, 40% of the energy expended by the current Gen3 car is recaptured for use through the rear and front powertrains! In the last decade, the Formula E cars’ top speed has increased by 100kmh, the maximum power by 150kW and the regeneration ability by 450kW. We’ve come a long way since the car swaps of 2014!...
