The display cases in “Cedar and Sea” are like many others in museum exhibits, full of traditional objects such as baskets, fishing hooks, carving tools and boxes. But compared with many other Indigenous exhibits in nontribal museums, there is a key difference: Most things here are not artifacts.
“Cedar and Sea” and “ntsayka ilíi ukuk — This is Our Place” are the latest exhibits at the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria that highlight modern communities and traditional culture in Indigenous communities along the northern Pacific coast.
