On June 19, 1865, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Texas became the last state in the Confederacy to emancipate African American slaves. Now, for the first time, IU will officially commemorate Juneteenth to celebrate Black liberation, history, and culture.
As Juneteenth falls on a Sunday this year, the IMU will be closed on Monday, June 20 to observe this federal holiday. We encourage all Hoosiers to take this day to reflect on the continued impacts of slavery and racial discrimination and to take action for social progress, justice, and equity.
