Did you know that MGMT originally started as a joke? MGMT was founded by the duo Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden during their time at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. The band named themselves ‘The Management,’ as a call out to the industry and those who run it, but later shortened their title to MGMT after they realized another group was already using it. Prior to the group being formed, VanWyngarden was part of a project called ‘Glitter Penis’ while in high school and was also a member of a band called ‘Accidental Mersh’ that went #2 on Napster’s “Unsigned Bands” chart in 2000. Goldwasser was invited by VanWyngarden in 2002 to stay with him in Memphis for the summer, and he played keys for Accidental Mersh during his time there. Those shows were potentially the first time the duo ever played together.
